GEOGRAPHY
With a surface of 1.780 km2, the island of Guadeloupe is the biggest of the Small Antilles. Comfortably recognizable by its butterfly shape, it is made up of 2 main islands, Basse-Terre and Grande-Terre, separated by a narrow arm of sea, the Salee River.
Surprisingly, Grande Terre is the smallest of the 2, relatively flat and prosperous because of cane sugar and Basse-Terre is thickly forested and mountainous with the Soufrière volcano culminating at 1.467 meters.

POINTS OF INTEREST ON THE ISLAND
- Basse Terre: La Soufrière and its vicinity (waterfalls, springs and magnificent tropical vegetation.
- Grande Terre: the cane fields, Pointe a Pitre with its market and its old colonial homes.
THE GOOD AND BAD BITS ON THE ISLAND!
- Attention in the Mancenillierses (trees situated on the beach and of which the sap and the fruit provoke some burns. The trunks are ringed with red).
OUR COMMENT
One of the most important isles of the Antilles in terms of size, of cultural interest, of population. It deserves a visit especially Basse Terre.
YOUR COMMENTS
We became addicted of the Salee river! We've been five or six times, once in the north-south direction, a bit more difficult. The big draught is evidently disadvantageous, but the gain of time (xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx) and especially the rising of sun on the mangrove swamp and the "Grand cul de sac marin" is worth braving the unavoidable mosquitos for. xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx! The passage is demarcated well, although the distance between some buoys is sometimes a little big.

COMMENTARY OF NAVIGATION
The access to this anchorage is very easy. Even without marker lights, it is possible at night.
The only difficulty is the number of boats at anchorage!... and there are strong gusts sometimes xxxx xxxxxxxxx...
A small port for fishing and boats has been constructed in the estuary of the Deshaies river. A stone pier protects it. The draught is very weak.

OUR COMMENT
Pleasant stopover, convenient going toward or coming from Antigua. The small city is nice and the bars and restaurants, welcoming.
YOUR COMMENT
Coretech: "Our anchorage the most cluttered in Guadeloupe, several score of boats, but it is worth the detour. Funny church, enter and try to read and to translate the inscriptions in" french "! A lot of stalls to make purchases or to have a drink. To eat: des ouassous = blue prawns with long claws at Mrs. Racine just on the left of the pier that had suffered badly in some hurricane.
Pierre: "Several small open grocery market open every morning; breakfast: at Amandine; the bread: chez Némorin; the cafés: Piano Piano (all new and owned by friendly Canadians) and l'Amer (a skipper); the friendly stalls: la Kaz and chez Lelette."
Muriel: "Not on the map: there is a (new?) small fishing (double pier with lights) at the side of the custom offices. Approach: where all the racks are... March "17, 01
Dominique: An embankment made of concrete has been constructed at the end of the dam of the small port beside customs, more sheltered than the pier in middle of harbour. A small walk, or one bus stop and you will discover the botanical garden you must visit on this stopover. For the day, it is preferable to anchor in front of the magnificent beaches of Grand Anse or La Perle where the little restaurants are great for lunch.
ILETS PIGEON
SECURITY
Access: EASY
Shelter: MEDIUM - Other shelter: Anse Deshaies, dist,: 8 M.
Entry at night: NO - Anchorage for the night: YES in quiet and stable conditions
Draught Max: No problems
Attention: Cousteau Natural Park natural: do not anchor to the N. of the Pte Malendure and in the islets.
Waypoint NAVIGATION: 16° 10, 01 N - 061° 47, 24 W,
Anchoring: To the South of Malendure: Bottom:4/5 m - Holding: average, bad in some places: verify anchorage!
COMMENTARY OF NAVIGATION
The access doesn't present any difficulty. It is prohibited to anchor in the islets and to the North of the tip of Malendure. It is the Cousteau Natural Park.
In the islets: take a mooring buoy (yellow solely, the others are reserved for the diving boats).
In the bay: attention to the "Rocher de Malendure" whose surroundings are not straightforward. Keep to bottom of the bay. The bottom has very uneven holding, verify your anchorage!
This area often choppy..
ATTENTION:
Fishing is forbidden strictly (and controlled)
LANDING: often difficult because of the surge. There is a pontoon on the tip of the Rocher de Malendure, at the diving club "the Healthy Hours". Ask permission to leave your dinghy!
SERVICES
No yacht services.
Supermarket Match on the road to Pigeon
BARS & RESTAURANTS
The Rocher de Malendure: good restaurant.
Various bars and restaurants on the road toward Pigeon. Some are very typical, without a lot of tourists.
YOUR COMMENT
Alain: "The first good thing to do after jumping on your boat is to leave the Bas du Fort marina and go to ilet pigeon safe from the coral gate. (what gate? NDLR) Rather choppy but OK (cata). A lot of waves while arriving on the beach for ti punches in the evening. We xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx. don't forget while leaving the marina lights and colors are reversed for us Europeans, xxxxxxxxxxxx! "
Jacques and Anne-Marie: "the diving is not the only interest on this stopover! one can also try green diving, superb canyonning with the Canopee club, acceuil terrific friendly and very beautiful walks in the rivers."
Pierre: "Anchorage very choppy. Very beautiful diving, beach cafés pleasant in the evening, after the departure of the tourists. "
Muriel: "We spent two nights at the îlets on fixed mooring without too much discomfort. Splendid. Attention, the color of the buoys are different: The Yellows,.. (only two and sheltered badly!) are reserved to the yachtsmen while the white and blue are for the pros (clubs of diving and glass bottomed boats). xxxxxxxxxxxxxx . March "7, 01
ANSE A LA BARQUE
SECURITY
Access: VERY EASY

Draught Max: No problem
Attention: -
Waypoint NAVIGATION: 16° 05,2 N - 061° 46, 86 W,
Anchorage: Bottom: sand - Holding: good
COMMENTARY OF NAVIGATION
Very easy access, the Anse a la Barque is good shelter on the West coast of Guadeloupe. The two lights function and permit entry at night. The beacon on the North tip of the bay is yellow, the one of the bottom is white.
At the time of our visit of April 2001, the beacon of the North tip doesn't function.
The best anchorage is located in the North part of the bay.
One can also anchor in the bay of the three Turtles, further to the North. This anchorage is a less good shelter but is often less frequented.
LANDING: on the beach (quiet)

DIVING
Snorkelling to the North and South tip of the bay: OK but no more than that.
ON LAND
Nothing particular. The beacon at the bottom of the bay
OUR COMMENT
Pretty bay edged with coconut trees. The beacon at the bottom of the bay surrounded by local fishing boats is very photogenic at sunset.
YOUR COMMENT
(anonymous) "It is a pity that the road passes very close to the beach and that it is loud, xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx. "
Alain: "Why do the english and french guides make such a meal of it? Nothing special except that we were only two at anchorage. NONE of the beacons functioned and we had planned to arrive there at the end of day and be guided by these lights. But all went well because no danger in the center of the bay.
Muriel: "Stopover without interest and dirty (wild surge). The busy road that surrounds this anchorage doesn't improve it... "March 5, 01
MARINA OF RIVER SENS
SECURITY
Access: EASY
Shelter: EXCELLENT
Entry at night: YES - Anchorage for the night: YES
Draught Max: 1,8 meters in the pass and about 2 meters in marina itself
Attention: -
Waypoint NAVIGATION: 15° 58, 93 N - 061° 42, 98 W,
Moistening: bottom :sand and rock 3/4 m - Holding: good.
COMMENTARY OF NAVIGATION
No particular difficulty. The entry beacons function and that permits a night entry.
Day entry is preferable because the pass of the port has been damaged by a hurricane and is now narrower.
Follow the coast of Guadeloupe to the entry.
If possible put your dinghy with the motor in the water to help manoeuvre in the port.
Capacity of 350 places, about twenty reserved for the yachts of passage. (VHF 16). The port is very often full in season.
The mooring itself is at the bottom of the quay in front of the buoy.
Avoid anchoring in front of Basse Terre, often choppy and it's better to anchor in the North and to the Marina's South (to see chart opposite).

In February 2001, impossible to reverse with 2 meters of draught. besides the port is very small: don't attempt if over 45 feet!!!
Entered in January 2003, we passed with 2,1 m of draught.
YOUR COMMENT
Freddy: "Very pretty small port with a cordial welcome."
Pierre: "Before the passage of Lenny it was easier. However, we went back on Thursday March 1st with the Prétorien: 38 feet in 2 m of draught. Port in fact very cluttered. "
I warn you that the entry beacons of marina on River Sens don't function anymore since the "Lenny" cyclone. Gil, of "Marisco" (first 310)
Arnaud: "the red light doesn't exist anymore at the entry, it is necessary to be guided therefore solely on the green, and to shave the entry port, because the other side is not at all healthy.

COMMENTARY OF NAVIGATION
Attention to the "Square Handkerchief" zone of high bottom (demarcated) that surges in case of surge. Then the beaconing is maintained well, it is sufficient to follow... Attention however to the commercial traffic in the fairway of access.
Marina has more than 1000 places. It is 30 min walk to PaP.
Anchoring forbidden in the Blue Lagoon - Possibile to anchor to the North of the îlet Cochon on bottom of good holding sand by about 6 meters.
The quay (n¡6) has been redone completely and is equipped with new electric boundary-marks capable of distributing 110 v, the 220 v and 380 v.

OUR COMMENT
Very protected and easy Marina to enter even at night. A good place to leave your boat or to start a cruise. One finds all services there.
The welcome is there very professional: someone will come out in a dinghy and show you a place.
The custom and immigration services are rather "finicky" but correct.
De très nombreux vols ont été signalés dans la marina ces derniers temps...
YOUR COMMENT
